Frequently Asked Questions

What is FSSC 22000?

FSSC 22000 is a food safety management system certification scheme that is based on the ISO 22000 standard and includes additional requirements for the prerequisite programs of the food industry. FSSC 22000 provides a framework for effectively managing food safety hazards, ensuring regulatory compliance and improving efficiency within the entire food supply chain.

What is FSSC 22000 Version 7?

FSSC 22000 Version 7 has now been published (May 2026), replacing the previous Version 6.

The update introduces several important changes:

  • New prerequisite programme (PRP) structure – aligned with the ISO 22002-x:2025 series, strengthening operational controls and bringing greater consistency across food chain sectors.
  • Alignment with GFSI Benchmarking Requirements 2024 – ensuring continued global recognition and meeting evolving retailer and stakeholder expectations.
  • Stronger focus on sustainability – with enhanced requirements supporting organisations in contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and embedding sustainability into food safety systems.
  • Clearer food chain categorisation – improving applicability and clarity across different sectors and activities.
  • Expanded scheme requirements – including greater emphasis on areas such as food safety culture, food loss and waste, allergen management and quality controls.
  • Structural and editorial improvements – making the scheme easier to interpret, implement and audit.

Organisations certified to Version 6 will have a 12-month transition period from publication to implement the new requirements.

What is ISO 22002-X:2025, and what are the implications on certification?

In July 2025, the International Organization for Standardization published a revised set of standards known as the ISO 22002-X:2025 series. These standards define prerequisite programmes, often referred to as PRPs, which form the operational foundation of a food safety management system.

ISO 22002 standards are commonly used alongside ISO 22000, the international standard for food safety management systems. ISO 22000 sets out the management system framework, while ISO 22002 provides detailed and sector-specific guidance on how prerequisite programmes should be designed and implemented.

The most significant change is the introduction of ISO 22002-100:2025, a new foundational standard. This document consolidates prerequisite programme requirements that are common across all sectors of the food, feed and packaging supply chain. Previously, these common requirements were repeated across multiple sector-specific standards, often with slight variations.

Although the revised ISO 22002 standards are already published, they do not automatically apply to existing FSSC 22000 certifications. The requirements will become auditable when they are formally adopted into FSSC 22000 Version 7.

What is the typical FSSC 22000 certification process?

The path your organisation takes to achieve FSSC 22000 certification depends on
your business’s size, maturity, and existing approach to managing risk, amongst other
factors. But the standard process to becoming FSSC certified includes three main steps.

Your organisation can request a voluntary FSSC 22000 pre-audit as preparation for the initial FSSC 22000 certification audit. When your organisation is ready, request the initial certification audit. The auditor will go on-site to review your food safety and quality systems, products and production processes in line with FSSC 22000 requirements. The auditor will issue an action plan listing all the findings and your company will have to complete it detailing the implemented corrections, root cause and the corrective action plans. The report and action plan released by the auditor is the subject of an independent technical review. Based on the result of the technical review, the certificate issuance is recommended or not.

Does GFSI recognise FSSC 22000?

Yes, FSSC 22000 is recognised by the GFSI. Organisations certified with FSSC 22000 can be recognised worldwide by manufacturers, retailers and other food service organisations as having a food management system which meets international standards. Furthermore, organisations certified to FSSC 22000 may be eligible to participate in other GFSI-recognised schemes such as SQF and BRCGS.

What is the difference between ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000?

ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 are both international standards, designed to provide a food safety management system (FSMS). However, FSSC 22000 is recognised by GFSI. If your customers require you to be certified to a GFSI-recognised standard, then FSSC 22000 could be the most suitable for your organization because, in addition to GFSI, the scheme also uses ISO 22000 as the requirement for the management system.
