What is the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED)?

Providing a legal structure for manufacturing and selling pressure equipment into Europe, the PED certificate allows companies to trade freely across the European Union (EU) without having to go through a local approval regime in every member state.

The PED applies to the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar. To help you achieve your PED certification and CE marking, our team of experts can guide you through the process. They can also help you to make sure the pressure equipment that you’re manufacturing, selling and operating, such as pressure vessels, tanks or boilers, is safe and compliant, so you can continue to trade within the European market without restrictions.

  • What are the benefits of PED?

    Enhanced safety

The CE mark on your pressure equipment shows that the products you are manufacturing have been inspected against and comply with EU safety requirements. It is also a key indicator that your products are safe and compliant with EU legislation.

    Commitment to quality

PED certification demonstrates your organisation’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards, providing your customers with confidence in the quality of your products.

    Access to the EU market

PED certification allows you to trade within the European market without restriction. CE marked products meet European health, safety, and environmental standards, and therefore can be sold in the European Economic Area.

  • Need help with PED?

The PED provides three routes to conformity, depending both on the equipment and the choice of the manufacturer. These are self-certification, third-party examination, and third-party inspection and quality management certification. Third parties must be registered Notified Bodies which are approved by an accreditation body.

LRQA was the first Notified Body to be accredited for the PED so by choosing LRQA, you will be working with an organisation that has the knowledge, experience, and capabilities to inspect your equipment against the PED requirements and ensure you continue to successfully trade in a competitive market across the EU.
