On 27 August 2025, the Draft International Standard (DIS) of ISO 9001 was officially published, marking a major step forward in the revision of the world’s most widely adopted quality management system (QMS) standard.
The publication of the DIS confirms that the revision process is moving ahead on schedule, with the final version of the updated standard, ISO 9001:2026, expected in the second half of next year.
The DIS gives an early indication of proposed updates and provides an opportunity for stakeholders to submit formal comments during the public consultation phase. It reflects global efforts to modernise ISO 9001 in response to today’s operational and stakeholder needs, with new emphasis placed on risk, digitalisation, sustainability, resilience and external stakeholder expectations.
What happens next?
The ISO technical committee responsible for ISO 9001 (ISO/TC 176/SC2) will now review feedback submitted during the DIS stage. If approved, the revision will move into the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) phase, expected early-2026, ahead of final publication later in the year.
Once published, organisations certified to ISO 9001:2015 will typically have a three-year transition period to align with the new requirements.
