What is BIM?
BIM is a transformative process that spans the life cycle of a built asset from concept to construction, operation and finally decommissioning. The core of the process is digital modelling but the principle feature is collaboration between the stakeholders and disciplines that interface to deliver a project from the project owner, architects, engineers and contractors.
Collaboratively producing information is facilitated through the medium of a virtual construction environment known as the Common Data Environment (CDE). The collaborative interchange of information by way of a Project CDE enables all authorised parties with different responsibilities within the project to view the design status in real-time and update it as necessary. The updated CDE and associated information will provide for ease of interrogation throughout the life of the project.

What is ISO 19650?
ISO 19650 is a series of international standards for managing information of a built asset throughout its life cycle using Building Information Modelling. The standards have the same principles and high-level requirements as the UK BIM Framework and are developed from the UK BIM Level 2 standards they replace.
Since 2016 the UK Government has required all centrally procured public sector construction projects to be performed by ‘BIM Ready’ organisations. That mandate has brought about increased awareness of BIM and the benefits associated with its adoption. Since this time, there has been a BIM Mandate in Annex B: Information Management Mandate of 'Transforming Infrastructure Performance: Roadmap to 2030'. BIM certification to ISO 19650 represents a clear demonstration of BIM system compliance to the UK Government and project owners.
LRQA were the first organisation to recognise the need for the construction sector to have a BIM certification process and developed the LRQA BIM Accreditation Scheme in 2013, which was revised in 2018 with the advent of the ISO 19650.

What are the benefits of BIM certification?
Risk management
By assessing potential risks and issues that may arise, the scheme ensures you plan for the unexpected. It gives you the ability to respond quickly, reducing downtime, improving efficiency and saving money in the process.
Quality assurance
The scheme ensures controls and processes are implemented to enable your organisation to effectively communicate from planning through to construction and into the operational life cycle of building the asset. It enables your organisation to safely maintain operations ensuring your customers receive the level of service they expect from your brand.
Reduced costs and improved safety
The digital construction of a facility significantly lowers the chances of reworks being required, planning for all outcomes and keeping the project on time and on budget. Safety on-site for construction teams and staff members once completed is improved through detailed planning and collaborative communication.
Additional benefits
BIM certification can also help organisations achieve increased productivity and speed of delivery, reduced waste and improved global market potential.
