Client challenge

CoorsTek works with engineers to develop tomorrow’s technology, from life-extending components to next-generation, renewable energy products. Established in 1910, the global leader in the supply of ceramic components and technical ceramics uses over half of the world’s known elements, supporting almost every industry in the global marketplace. Today, 6,000 CoorsTek employees operates from over 500,000 square metres of manufacturing space across four continents, providing vast manufacturing capacity and scale.

We have been supporting the company for over 20 years with its certified quality management system (QMS) and accreditations. CoorsTek saw certification to the revised IATF 16949:2016 standard as a must-have. This would help to enhance customer confidence in the company’s operations, further strengthen the firm’s reputation and offer a competitive advantage when attracting new automotive customers, who prefer to partner with businesses that comply with a robust QMS. One of the main challenges was the scale of implementation changes required in a short amount of time.

How we helped

To support certification to the revised IATF 16949:2016 standard, we helped our client in two main ways.

  1. First, we carried out a gap analysis. Our assessment identified findings which enabled CoorsTek to improve its existing QMS.
  2. We then delivered internal auditor training. The course involved working in groups and role-play activities, putting the knowledge gained about the updated standard into practice.
LRQA auditors understood our business and considered our organisational needs during the assessment and certification process...

Client insight

CoorsTek knew that senior management commitment to the requirements of the new standard was crucial, setting up an executive team at an early stage. The UK project team also received valuable support from CoorsTek’s Corporate Global Quality arm, ensuring consistent high quality was met throughout international operations.

Karen Ross, Quality Manager at CoorTek, explains: “We benefitted both from the actual certification as well as the journey towards certification. Engaging our employees, top management and our Global Quality team was necessary for our success. By involving the people who manage and use the processes every day, you guarantee improved and better processes.

Business benefits

  • Enhanced reputation, with positive comments received from customers and the industry.
  • An improved quality management system to further reduce risk and proactively implement controls.
  • A competitive advantage when seeking new business.
