Government announces funding for low-emissions food production technologies.

The UK Government announced that it has allocated GBP 20 million of research funding towards grants for technologies that support low-emissions food production or food distribution systems.

Projects seeking grant awards under the scheme must show that their technology is likely to benefit mainstream consumers, reduce emissions and create wider societal benefits with applications in multiple systems throughout the food industry.

The funding is part of a larger GBP 90 million funding package announced in June 2019 for the Transforming Food Production Challenge, which is intended to fund research to improve the efficiency of UK food production and is administered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), a quasi-independent NGO funded by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

The Transforming Food Production Challenge is in turn a part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, which seeks to improve UK productivity by stimulating innovation in key industries.
