Label Rouge Scottish Farmed Salmon
For over 20 years, LRQA is proud to have provided Label Rouge assurance and remains the only non-French certification body to do so. It is widely considered one of the most prestigious food standard labels within the Scottish salmon industry.
Overview
In 1992, Scottish salmon was the first product to be awarded the exclusive Label Rouge qualifier by the Ministry of French Agriculture. It is only awarded to fish farmers that can demonstrate a superior quality of produce – with a particular focus on taste.
LRQA remains the only non-French body that is accredited by the French National Commission for Labels and Certification to provide assessments for the scheme. It is also inclusive of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
What are the benefits?
Comprehensive Assurance
Members of the scheme benefit from guaranteed assurance for the entire process chain. This includes salmon rearing, feed composition, geographical location and percentage of lipid in the flesh. This is supplemented by biannual taste tests conducted by independent French laboratories, comparing Label Rouge salmon to standard farmed salmon.
Mark of quality
Salmon carrying the Label Rouge qualifier is known to trade and consumers as an extremely high-quality product. This provides a clear differentiation to competitors and demonstrates dedication to heightened food standards.
Wider market access
In addition to wider market access based on quality, the Label Rouge assurance enables easier access to the French market. This is supported by the Saumon Écossais identity.
Traceability & quality
In addition to proving products are of the highest quality, accreditation provides a clear marker that all produce is traceable to certified facilities.
