US Department of Transportation

Certification of DOT cylinders.

What is it?

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) sets safety standards for portable cylinders used to transport non-flammable, flammable, and poisonous materials. So-called "DOT cylinders" are used in all 50 states.

Because they are used in transporation, their weight is an important consideration. They have thinner walls than other ASME tanks, and must be periodically re-certified and marked.

DOT pressure vessels are made to DOT specifications for a rated pressure and have one or more dates stamped on the cylinder. The cylinder cannot be filled if the latest date has passed.

What we do.

LRQA is an approved agency for the inspection of DOT cylinders under the IIA.
