LRQA awards Naver’s ‘AI Tab’ ISO/IEC 42001 AI Management System certification

Verification of compliance with international standards for artificial intelligence management systems relating to the development and provision of search-based agentic AI services

LRQA (Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance), a global risk management specialist organisation, has awarded ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification to the artificial intelligence management system of Naver’s search-based agentic AI service, ‘AI Tab’. The certification ceremony, held on 2 November at Naver 1784 in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, was attended by representatives from both organisations, including Yoo Bong-seok, Naver’s Chief Risk Officer (CRO), and Fotis Kampouris, LRQA’s Executive Vice President for the Asia-Pacific region.

ISO/IEC 42001ISO/IEC 42001: International Standard for Responsible AI Operations

ISO/IEC 42001 is an international standard for artificial intelligence management systems, designed to enable organisations to systematically identify and manage the risks associated with the development and use of AI technologies. It sets out requirements to ensure that AI governance is integrated into an organisation’s policies and operational processes, and that responsible management and continuous improvement are achieved throughout the entire lifecycle of AI systems.

As AI technology has recently evolved beyond the generation and analysis of information to ‘agent-based AI’—which understands user intent and performs actual tasks—an organisation-wide framework for managing risks from the development to the operation of AI systems has become increasingly important. Alongside changes in the global regulatory environment, such as the EU AI Act, requirements for corporate AI governance are becoming more specific, and the importance of having the conformity of management systems independently verified against international standards is also growing.

Naver’s ‘AI Tab’ artificial intelligence management system confirmed to comply with international standards

This certification was granted for the artificial intelligence management system governing the development of AI models and the provision of services on Naver’s ‘AI Tab’. LRQA conducted an independent third-party audit to assess whether the management system complied with the requirements of ISO/IEC 42001 and awarded the certification.

Fotis Kampouris, Executive Vice President for LRQA’s Asia-Pacific region, stated:

“AI is now evolving beyond being merely a tool for generating information to a stage where it can make its own judgements and perform tasks. In particular, as AI is being applied to search services that many users rely on in their daily lives, it is important to systematically manage not only the performance of the technology but also its impact on users and the associated risks.

This certification is significant in that it confirms, through an independent third-party audit, that Naver’s artificial intelligence management system—which it operates throughout the development and provision of the AI tab—complies with international standards. As AI technology continues to advance rapidly, international standards and objective verification will play a vital role in enabling companies to establish responsible AI operating frameworks and enhance trust.”
