Five years on from the publication of ISO 50001, the international standard for Energy Management Systems (EnMS), it has become the latest to enter the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) revisions process.
Under the care of ISO Technical Committee, ISO/TC 242, which has recently become TC 301, ISO 50001 will follow the same revisions process as ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001. Last week, experts from over 30 countries gathered in Stockholm, Sweden to discuss the revisions at an event hosted by the Swedish Standards Institute (SIS), the ISO member for the country.
Established to help organisations develop and establish systems to improve their energy performance including energy efficiency improvements, energy consumption reductions and cost and in turn lead to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, over 7000 organisations globally had already achieved certification against ISO 50001 by the end of 2014.
LRQA EMS and Energy Technical Manager, Judith Turner, welcomes the revision to the standard; “In the 5 years since ISO 50001 was published, so much has changed in industry and the global marketplace, it’s important we take this opportunity to ensure ISO 50001 remains as relevant for organisations as it was in 2011. The recent revisions to standards such as ISO 14001 show how beneficial the revisions process is and this will allow ISO/TC 301 to ensure that the same benefits are realised for EnMS.”
