The DWI Risk Management Approval Scheme.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate Risk Management Approval Scheme (DWIRMAS) has been developed by the Inspectorate and LRQA in consultation with Anglian Water, Wessex Water and United Utilities, who participated in the pilot process.

The scheme aims to verify that water companies have implemented the risk-based drinking water safety plan (WSP) process advocated by the World Health Organisation, which is consistent with:

  • the requirements of the Water Industry Specification document – WIS 04-01-04
  • the BSI standard for Security of Drinking Water Supply – Guidelines for Risk and Crisis Management – BS EN 15975-2
  • and the DWIRMAS guidance document.

Gaining DWIRMAS approval simplifies the variation of sampling frequencies associated with the regulatory sampling programme that was introduced by regulation 9 of the Water Supply (Water Quality) (Amendment) Regulations 2018, therefore reducing the number of samples a water company needs to take, leading to time and cost savings.
