Introduction
The Pressure Vessel Design Training Course introduces the fundamental concepts in the mechanical design of pressure vessels and heat exchangers. It gives participants the tools to understand the rules on which the international design codes are based, guiding them through a theoretical explanation of the critical steps behind those rules. The course helps designers build a better understanding of the Codes and keep a practical overview of the engineering problems that can be lost when the different design codes are applied.
Who should attend?
This entry-level course is suitable for pressure vessel designers, manufacturers of pressure equipment, engineering companies, inspection bodies, technical experts, end users and anyone interested in pressure vessel design.
What will you learn?
By completing this course, participants will gain an introduction to:
- The fundamental concepts used in the mechanical design of pressure vessels and heat exchangers.
- The rules behind international pressure vessel design codes, including ASME VIII Divisions 1 and 2 and EN 13445.
- Pressure equipment definitions, life cycle management, failure modes, materials, design methods, loads and load cases.
- Stress criteria, stress categories, safety factors, allowable stresses, thickness calculations and joint efficiency.
- Fracture toughness, impact testing, residual stress, heat treatment and pressure testing.
- Internal and external pressure calculations for shells, heads, conical transitions, flat heads, openings and flanged joints.
- Non-pressure loads, including nozzle loads, attachment loads, wind loads and seismic loads.
- Design considerations for horizontal vessels on saddles and vertical vessels with skirts, legs, brackets and rings.
- Shell and tube heat exchanger and air cooler design topics, including TEMA nomenclature, tube sheets, tube-to-tube sheet joints and expansion joints.
- Introductory design by analysis procedures, creep behaviour and fatigue calculation methods in EN 13445 and ASME VIII Division 2.
