Part II: Guidance for certification of CSC containers
LRQA's Container Quality Scheme Guide
Download guide: Achieve compliance for CSC and ISO containers
The Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) establishes internationally recognised requirements for the design, testing, approval and inspection of freight containers. LRQA supports manufacturers and operators with certification services covering both new-build and in-service CSC containers.
Our Container Certification Quality Scheme provides guidance on design appraisal, prototype testing, production inspection and ongoing compliance to help organisations meet regulatory obligations while maintaining operational efficiency.
New-build CSC container certification
Before containers can enter service, manufacturers must demonstrate compliance through:
- Design appraisal and technical review
- Type approval assessment
- Prototype testing
- Factory quality management verification
- Production inspection and certification
CSC type approvals remain valid for up to 10 years and may require revalidation if regulations change or approvals expire.
In-service CSC container inspections
Container owners and operators must ensure containers continue to meet safety and regulatory requirements throughout their operational life. LRQA inspections help verify:
- Structural integrity
- Marking and identification compliance
- CSC plate requirements
- Repair and modification compliance
- Continued fitness for service
