OOCL Meets GHG Scopes 1 to 3 Inventory Verification Requirements

In the pursuit of reaching higher standards and transparency in OOCL’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reporting, OOCL is very pleased to announce its achievement in not only meeting the GHG Scopes 1 and 2 inventory verification requirements that it announced last year, but also for Scope 3 which focuses on indirect emissions associated to air travel by employees of its Hong Kong office and as defined in the “Greenhouse Gas Protocol – A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard”.

OOCL’s journey to building on its sustainability profile has been an important one for the company as it further strengthens its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives to reduce emissions from its operations while also meeting the increasingly stringent regulatory requirements in the industry. With its latest Scope 1, 2 and 3 verification status, OOCL is already well positioned in meeting all the ESG disclosure requirements for listed companies in Hong Kong towards the 2017 reporting year.

“The establishment of our GHG inventory and the adoption of internationally-recognized verification standards demonstrate our commitment to sustainability in the global supply chain and best practices in the industry,” said Mr. Stephen Ng, Director of Trades of OOCL. “Looking forward, we will continue to progressively enhance our ESG works to meet the evolving needs of our stakeholders and to systematically establish our Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to tackle the ever-increasing challenges in the global environment across industries.”

Verified by LRQA, this is the fourth consecutive year that OOCL has achieved dual reporting standards through the use of Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) and ISO 14064-1:2006 verification tools to ensure that OOCL’s data disclosure is transparent, accurate, complete, consistent and relevant.

Commenting on the achievement, Mr. John Rowley, Managing Director of Management Systems and Inspection Services at LRQA said: “Once again, OOCL continues to demonstrate their committed approach to sustainability through their transparent GHG reporting by constantly increasing the scope of their verification.  OOCL’s significant achievement within this arena has – for the first time this year – included verification to cover GHG Scope 3; further, OOCL has demonstrated their compliance to CCWG’s 2017 new version of procedures and guidance.”

Throughout the verification process, OOCL prepared all the proper documentation and records showing the effective management and internal controls for collecting and reporting of the required data to meet the dual standards.  It also verified the adequacy of the processes being implemented in managing the consumption and emissions data of its vessels, terminals and head office. They are pleased that not a single discrepancy, misstatement or nonconformity was identified.
