Şimşekler Ship Recycling Company: Making history in Turkey.

Şimşekler Ship Recycling wanted to be known in the marine industry as a world-leading, responsible recycler. The company approached us to help demonstrate this through being part of the International Ship Recycling Association (ISRA). ISRA aims to promote environmentally sound global ship recycling by uniting responsible facilities. An independent assessment of each facility is required, based on ISRA’s own quality standards, before full ISRA 'A' Membership can be granted. Achieving this status would be a first in Turkey.

We brought considerable experience of ship recycling to our client’s requirements, going back to the 1990s. This included knowledge gained as the International Association of Classification Societies' representative on ship recycling at the International Maritime Organization. Our background in this area included investing in sustainable ship recycling projects, and working in partnership with shipowners, recycling facilities, universities and government agencies. In addition, we helped develop ISO 30000, the standard for ship recycling management systems for safe and environmentally sound ship recycling facilities.

Our support was three-fold: 

• our team ofmarine ship recycling specialists carried out a desk-top review of our client’s completed ISRA checklist, ship recycling facility plan and supporting documentation

• our environmental auditors conducted a site visit to verify the supplied information

• we issued a final report and declaration to ISRA, summarising the findings of the desk-top review and the site visit, and recommending Şimşekler Ship Recycling for full ISRA 'A' Membership.

As the very first ISRA 'A' Member in Turkey, our client benefited from:
