LRQA is pleased to see the comprehensive requirements as defined in its existing BIM certification scheme have been validated, through significant alignment with the recently published ISO 19650 requirements. Below are some frequently asked questions we've received about the new standard.

What is ISO 19650?
The ISO 19650 standard is an international standard for managing information over the whole life cycle of a built asset using building information modelling (BIM).
It contains the same requirements as BIM and is closely aligned with the UK 1192 standards.
In Q1 2019 the first two ISO 19650 series standards were published:
• BS EN ISO 19650-1: Organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling -- Information management using building information modelling: Concepts and principles
• BS EN ISO 19650-2: Organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling -- Information management using building information modelling: Delivery phase of the assets
These two ISO standards are based on the UK’s standards for information management using building information modelling, BS 1192:2007 + A2:2016 and PAS 1192-2:2013 which are superseded.
PD 19650-0 - UK Transition Guidance, was also published which will aid implementation of the ISO standards in the UK and ensure BIM fits within the ISO framework.

When was ISO19650-1 & 2 published?
December 2018 with a UK Annex version published in January 2019.

Which UK standards have been replaced?
BS 1192:2007 + A2:2016 and PAS 1192-2:2013.

What is the current status of BS 1192:2007 + A2:2016 and PAS 1192-2:2013?
On publication of ISO 19650 they were both Withdrawn with immediate effect.

Should we now ignore BS 1192:2007 + A2:2016 and PAS 1192-2:2013?
No. The BIM principles have been retained and these standards even though they have been Withdrawn remain a useful reference guide.

When should we transition to the new ISO 19650?
The vast majority of projects during 2019 will continue to be based on the UK BS / PAS suite of standards, but it is anticipated that the first ISO19650 procured projects will enter the market in the latter part of 2019.

We are working on a BIM Level 2 project now do we need to change to ISO 19650?
No. If you are already using the existing BIM Level 2 BS / PAS suite of standards on your projects no changes will be required as there should be no inconsistency with those and the new ISO 19650.

Are there any new roles or responsibilities that the ISO introduces?
Roles are no longer defined and are replaced by “functions” in the ISO, which provides some clarity relative to PAS1192:2 which was prescriptive in terms of roles and responsibilities.

Will other standards in the BIM suite be transitioned to an ISO?
Yes, there is a programme for transitioning each Level 2 standard applicable to the international community. In the UK, some standards will remain British Standards,
In 2020 PAS 1192-3:2014 was replaced by:
- BS EN ISO 19650-3 Organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling -- Information management using building information modelling – Part 3: Operational phase of assets
BS 1192-4:2014 is being replaced by another British Standard which will sit beneath the high-level requirements for information exchange in:
- ISO/FDIS 19650-4 Organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling (BIM) — Information management using building information modelling — Part 4: Information exchange
In 2020 PAS 1192-5:2015 was replaced by:
- In 20 BS EN ISO 19650-5 Organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling -- Information management using building information modelling – Part 5: Security-minded approach to information management
Plans are currently unclear for the transition of PAS 1192-6:2017.

Will the new ISO 19650 impact LRQA BIM Certification?
No, LRQA has a transition process in place which will enable transition to ISO 19650 to be facilitated during the standard surveillance programme at no extra cost. However if clients wanted to transition before the programmed surveillance then an additional cost for the visit may be incurred.

Will the LRQA Accreditation scheme continue to reference BIM Level 2?
Yes, BIM Level 2 is supported by the LRQA BIM Guidance document but will now also include ISO 19650 parts 1 and 2. However BIM level 2 has been replaced by BIM stage 2 to align with the International market.

How can I prepare for the transition?
In the first instant review current BIM documentation and revise the terminology to reflect the changes in ISO 19650 and communicate the changes to key BIM staff.
