Overview

The American Petrolum Institute (API) publishes standards and recommended practices for the oil and natural gas industry worldwide.

As scrutiny of the oil and gas industry increases, end-users are in turn scrutinizing their supply chains. More and more, they're now requiring third-party inspection of projects where API standards are specified.

Need help with API standards?

The API standards we can inspect to include:

  • API 6A
Which examines mechanical properties of metallic materials used for Spec 6A and Spec 17D wellhead equipment for service above 250ºF.
  • API 16A
Which provides requirements for performance, design, materials, testing and inspection, welding, marking, handling, storing and shipping of drill-through equipment used for drilling for oil and gas.
  • API 17D
Which provides specifications for subsea wellheads, mudline wellheads, drill-through mudline wellheads and both vertical and horizontal subsea trees.
  • API 53
Which involves the testing of blowout prevention equipment systems on land and marine drilling rigs.
  • API 505
Which provides guidelines for determining the degree and extent of Class I, Zone 0, Zone 1, and Zone 2 locations at petroleum facilities, for the selection and installation of electrical equipment.
  • API 580
Which provides users with the basic elements for developing and implementing a risk-based inspection (RBI) program for fixed equipment and piping in the hydrocarbon and chemical process industries.
  • API 620
Which covers large, field-assembled storage tanks of that contain petroleum intermediates and finished products, as well as other liquid products commonly handled and stored by the various branches of the industry.
  • API 650
Which establishes minimum requirements for material, design, fabrication, erection, and testing for vertical, cylindrical, above ground, closed and open top wielded carbon or stainless steel storage tanks for internal pressures approximating atmospheric pressure.
  • API 661
Which covers air cooled heat exchangers for general refinery service.
