Sener awarded ISO 19650 certification in BIM from LRQA

Sener becomes Spain's first engineering company to be certified by LRQA in BIM to the standard.

Madrid (Spain), March 15, 2022 – The engineering and technology company Sener has been awarded certification by LRQA for its Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology, against the UNE-EN ISO 19650 standard. The certificate was presented at Sener's offices in Tres Cantos, Madrid, to the General Manager of Sener Engineering, Gabriel Alarcón, by the Managing Director of LRQA Inspection Services, José Rivero.

Sener's achievement, as Spain's first engineering company to achieve certification for its BIM methodology, is a milestone in the company’s digitalization strategy; after completing its own digital transformation, with the implementation of the BIM methodology and other digital tools, Sener is specializing in customer solutions that combine data processing technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning and virtual reality applications, including RESPIRA®, ACROT and ORUGA®.

General Manager, Gabriel Alarcón said:

“With this certification we have met the objective we set in 2017 when we created the Sener BIM Office. Our commitment to technology and innovation is enhanced by our digital solutions and Sener is a trailblazer in the application of both virtual design tools for construction with the implementation of BIM methodology in its construction projects dating back to 2006.

“Sener is internationally recognized as a technology leader thanks to our talented people, integrated in highly qualified professional teams, whose passion enables us to be the first to discover and apply best practice and offer innovative, high quality solutions.”

LRQA Managing Director of Inspection Services, José Rivero said:

“Our service is about vocation ensuring success for our clients today and tomorrow. LRQA’s global reputation for technical knowledge, industry expertise and an innovative approach to certification, verification and inspection, has made it an industry leader in risk management and control.

“We are proud to have worked with Sener on its BIM-ISO 19650 certification, as the company continues to demonstrate its commitment to quality and innovation.”

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of generating and managing data by digitising a project over its life-cycle to create a 3D virtual representation on a collaborative platform. BIM allows to information to be shared and used effectively to manage projects and assets, enhancing efficiency, providing a reliable basis for decision-making, and a fundamental tool for planning. The process leads to better specifications, quotations, compliance, construction simulations and risk reduction, including improved project sustainability in terms of reducing consumption, materials used and predictive maintenance from the early stages of design and construction.

The BIM methodology is established as a key tool in urban infrastructure, but until recently very few Spanish companies have obtained UNE-EN ISO 19650 certification, which guarantees correct handling of information.

BIM technology is part of Sener's DNA, as a trailblazing company in the field of design and construction. Sener began working with BIM software in 2006 on building and infrastructure projects, becoming one of Spain's first companies to adopt the methodology and form a specialized internal team – the Sener BIM Office - to promote on-going improvement and implementation of the methodology.

Sener's has applied BIM methodology on innovative projects including the retractable pitch at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium; metros and trams, such as Panama Line 3, Guadalajara metro, Cairo monorail, Doha Red Line, workshops and depots of the Doha metro, Ontario Line, the Edinburgh tram, the Sidney–Melbourne metro, high-speed projects such as the High Speed 2 line (HS2) in the United Kingdom; buildings such as the BBVA bank headquarters in Madrid; and projects in the energy sector, such as the solar thermal power plants Noor I in Morocco, Bokpoort in South Africa and Termosol I & II in Spain.

Sener's experience with BIM has enabled it to become a benchmark company in the application of BIM technology and processes both in its own projects and in implementation for other companies.
