ISO 3834 is the international standard for quality requirements for the fusion welding of metallic materials. ISO 9001 states that, where necessary, special processes shall be identified, and the ISO 3834 standard is an excellent way to meet this requirement.
Because the quality of welding is manufactured into the product - not inspected - having an ISO 3834 certificate demonstrates their competence in fusion welding processes, assessed independently.
Compliance with ISO 3834 Parts 2, 3 or 4 as appropriate, is now mandatory in many EN pressure vessel and construction standards.
The ISO 3834 certification process follows five steps:
- System examination: An examination of the company's welding quality management system helps identify areas which require attention and correction.
- Questionnaire: The scheme requires you to complete a detailed questionnaire about the capabilities of your facility. This includes qualifications and experience of the nominated welding coordination personnel.
- Self-audit: In the third step, you conduct a self-audit against the ISO 3834-2 audit checklist.
- Implementation and confirmation: The audit is a two-stage process. Stage 1 identifies the areas within the welding quality management system which require attention. Stage 2 is implementation confirmation, where the assessment team will examine specific contracts to assess compliance with customers' expectations.
- Validity: Once issued, the ISO 3834 certificate is valid for five years. An annual surveillance audit by a qualified assessor is required to maintain the approval.
