ISO and climate change whitepaper

ISO and climate change

Get in touch

In early 2024, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) will amend many of the familiar management system standards (MSS), including ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environmental management), and ISO 45001 (occupational health & safety) to incorporate additional text addressing climate change.

ISO sees the important role that international standards need to play in the world’s efforts to address the global climate emergency. Such standards play a crucial part in underpinning the global economy, creating trust in all aspects of international trade, promoting good practices, and providing the basis for assurance of processes and data – and this is why the amendments go beyond the standards that specifically support the climate agenda.

In this whitepaper, we explore the background of this decision and how it fits with ISO’s climate change commitment. You will also learn:

• Which standards are affected by the amendments,
• How the MSS core text is being amended,
• Timelines
• And what it means for organizations that use these standards.
