Our voice on fuel


Tim’s career has spanned 44 years as a marine engineer with 20 years at sea on a variety of ship types and a further 22 years to date as consultant on marine fuels, exhaust emissions and lately on ship performance related matters.

Timothy is a member of IBIA, CIMAC Fuels WG7 and the ISO TC 28/SC 4/WG 6 where he has actively contributed to the development of the 2010/12 and latest publication of the 2017 ISO 8217 marine fuel standard along with helping to product a series of supporting guidance documents addressing the current and future concerns of marine fuels on subjects such as: biodiesel, ignition and combustion, cold flow properties of distillates and the interpretation of Sulphur content for compliance.  

From 2013 he is actively involved in the European Shipping Sustainability Forum sub group (ESSF) for the Implementation of the European Sulphur Directive Implementation Decision and more recently selected to be part of the new ESSF SG for Air Emission from Ships, which has a core objective to address the concerns of the implementation of the 0.50% outside ECA-SOX limit in 2020 and other key emissions issues in relation to the effective implementation of the European Sulphur directive.

His work covers all matters related to effective fuel management from the bunker manifold to the exhaust stack evaluating the best approaches to optimising fuel efficiency and assessing alternative solutions to compliance to exhaust emission environmental legislation.
