SQWV is an independent assurance body aiming to develop, maintain and promote quality standards across the venison industry within Scotland. The scheme only relates to ‘wild’ venison, ensuring deer populations are managed humanely and producers adhere to hygiene standards.
Their goal is to ensure consumers receive fully traceable products guaranteed to have been produced to the highest standards. The scheme was originally developed over an 18-month period by industry specialists from public and private sectors. This included the Scottish Gamekeepers Association, Forest Enterprise, the Association of Deer Management Groups and the Scottish Association of Game Dealers and Processors.
What are the benefits?
SQWV assurance has two assessment schemes: the Stalking & Carcase Handling scheme and the Primary Processor scheme. These evaluate the entire food chain, from game hunting to meat processing, providing comprehensive assurance on products and facilities.
Assurance guarantees traceability on all wild venison hunted and processed. This is often expected by consumers and trade bodies, ensuring that members are responding to a rapidly growing expectation of food standards.
The scheme can reduce inspection frequency from local authorities and trading standards, as they recognise SQWV members adhere to strict hygiene and processing guidelines.
