LRQA encourages companies to reduce plastic waste with new initiative.

LRQA has welcomed the new Plastic Stewardship Initiative announcement (10th Feb) by Verra, a leading global non-profit standard-setter.

LRQA are part of the 3R Initiative committee, a coalition committed to achieving zero plastic waste, alongside brands including Danone, Nestlé, Tetra Pak, BVRio, Conservation International, McKinsey.org, South Pole, SYSTEMIQ, Natural Capital Partners and Veolia.

Heather Moore, who manages LRQA's sustainability team in the Americas, commented: “As a sustainability professional and a sailor who has seen a lot of plastic in our waters, I am very excited to be involved in the development of the Plastics Standard Initiative.  I believe it has great potential to bring awareness to a significant issue affecting our ecosystems and to drive real change in how companies manage plastics in supply chains. The initiative supports projects focused on reusing and recycling plastics by providing a financial incentive along with a verifiable system to track reductions. LRQA sees plastic management as one of the big global issues and we are delighted to be working together with our clients to help deal with this crucial supply chain issue.”

The Plastic Stewardship is one of several sustainability initiatives that LRQA is involved with, evidenced by LRQA being one of the first companies to back the Responsible Plastic Management (RPM) program, a global assurance program to help measure and verify plastic management performance.

Included in the Plastic Stewardship initiative are Guidelines for Corporate Plastic Stewardship and a Plastic Waste Reduction Standard (Plastic Standard). The Guidelines for Corporate Plastic Stewardship, developed by the 3R Initiative, South Pole, Quantis and EA, provide best practices for companies to credibly and transparently quantify and report on their plastic footprints, leakage and commitments to reduce plastic waste.
