LRQA ISO Standards Update: Modern Terminals is one of the first in Greater China to achieve ISO 14001:2015

Modern Terminals ISO 14001:2015

On 23 November 2015, Modern Terminals, one of Hong Kong’s most efficient container terminal operators, became among the first organisations in Greater China to be certified against the recently revised International Environmental Management System (EMS) standard, ISO 14001:2015, by LRQA in Hong Kong.

This significant achievement is a testament to Modern Terminals’ pledge towards sustainable development through its corporate environmental policy, and its ongoing efforts in not just managing but also reducing its impact on the environment.

Mr K.T. Lee, General Manager – Engineering & Procurement and Chairman of Environmental Committee at Modern Terminals, said, “At our company, we take pride in our continuous drive towards mitigating pollution and making environmental considerations an integral part of our organisation’s culture and decision-making. ISO 14001:2015 certification validates the progress Modern Terminals has made in the area of environmental management, and underscores our commitment to staying ahead of the curve in improving organisation-wide environmental performance.”

Originally certified for ISO 14001:2004 by LRQA in 2009, Modern Terminals began its journey towards transitioning to ISO 14001:2015 well in advance of the standard’s publication. Working closely with Modern Terminals, LRQA provided guidance on incorporating the new and revised areas within their EMS prior to a transition assessment in November 2015.

Mr. Bjoern Mueller, LRQA Area Operations Manager for Greater China, said, “The newly revised version of ISO 14001 is aimed at providing organisations with a holistic approach to managing all their environmental issues. The pace at which Modern Terminals achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification is exemplary of how an organisation can transition to the revised standard, with the help of a dedicated team internally and together with a leading third-party certification body such as LRQA.”

Transition to ISO 14001:2015

The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have specified a transitional period of three years, ending in September 2018. After September 2018 certificates based on ISO 14001:2004 are no longer valid.

Through our extensive range of training and assessment services, LRQA is helping organisations worldwide transition to the new and revised ISO standards.
