International Environment Management System Standard ISO 14001 is one step closer to a revised version following the recent meeting of ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC207/SC1/WG5, which was held in Panama City, between 23rd and 31st May 2014. LRQA, through our membership of the IIOC, regularly participates in the ISO/TC207/SC1/WG5, which is responsible for the revision of international environmental management system standard ISO 14001.
With ISO 14001 currently at Committee Draft stage, there were a number of timelines emerging from the meeting relative to the revision progress. The key one of these is that the currently forecast date for the publication of the ISO/DIS 14001:2014 in English is July 1st 2014. This will be followed by the DIS being translated into French, German and Spanish from July to September. The formal balloting period will commence in September 2014 for three months, closing in November.
“The publication of any draft international standard signifies the first time organisations can access and review the proposed changes, thereby enabling them to begin their transition process,” said Steve Williams, LRQA Deputy Technical Director. “With the recent publication of ISO/DIS 9001:2014 generating significant levels of interest from current and future users, we are expecting a similar reaction to the next key milestone in the revision of ISO 14001.” The final publication of ISO 14001 is expected to be September 2015.
As has already been communicated, ISO 14001 will encompass Annex SL - the high level structure and common text for all management system standards. In addition, it is anticipated that there will be a greater focus on value chain analysis when this revised version is published.
