LRQA delivers Japan's first ship-related environmental performance verification to NYK Line

Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) has awarded Japanese shipping giant NYK Line its country's first independent environmental performance audit against criteria set by the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG).

Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) has awarded Japanese shipping giant NYK Line its country's first independent environmental performance audit against criteria set by the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG).

The verification, designed by the CCWG to measure the environmental performance of container shipping, attests to NYK Lines' accurate, complete and consistent disclosure of their sulphur and CO2 emissions data.

The process independently verified the environmental performance metrics that NYK compiled from its container fleet throughout 2010, as the carrier sought to respond to stakeholders’ desire for greater transparency and independent verification of the environmental impact of transporting their goods by ship.

LRQA assessors undertook a detailed audit of one of NYK’s container vessels to independently verify and substantiate the consolidated container fleet data supplied by NYK's head office, a process that increased stakeholder confidence.

"Increased interest from stakeholders in the supply chain, together with the need for companies to be both transparent and accountable, has driven environmental performance verification to the top of the corporate agenda for ship operators,” said Dr. Dave Mateo, Climate Change & Sustainability Specialist for LRQA Japan.

Two business streams within Lloyd's Register, namely LRQA and Marine, cooperated on the project.

During an ceremony at NYK Line headquarters in Tokyo late last year, Dr Mateo, and Akira Noura - the International Client Group Manager for LRQA Japan - presented the verification to Tomoo Kitayama, General Manager of the Environment Group at NYK's technical headquarters, and to Katsura Yamaguchi and Atsushi Kan of the carrier's environmental-management team (as seen in the pictures).
